Two students, who attended KEAM exam, test positive for Covid-19

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two students who attended Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) examination in two different centres in the district have been tested positive for Covid 19, adding to the concerns of Capital which has been struggling to cope with a huge surge in cases.It is learnt that one student from Karakulam attended examination at a centre at Karamana while another student from Pozhiyur attended the exam at a centre at Thycaud. The mother and siblings of the student from Pozhiyur have also been tested positive.The health team has initiated contact tracing of other students who attended the exam in the same hall. The students who were tested positive have been shifted to first-line treatment centres. The examination was held on Thursday.The student from Karakulam was made to sit in a separate room in the examination centre after it was communicated that the student was under observation. In the case of student hailing from Pozhiyur, there were no symptoms, according to health authorities The conduct of KEAM in the city which was under triple lockdown had raised concerns. However, authorities went on with the decision to conduct examination riding on the confidence in conducting SSLC examinations amidst pandemic spread.

The social media was agog with pictures of crowding at some of the examination centres on the day and authorities were blamed for having failed at ensuring social distance protocol. The positive cases among students who attended KEAM come at a time when Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had termed the outbreak of the disease in the capital under triple lockdown as a shame to the entire state.


In the review meeting held on July 17, chief minister said that emergence of more cases in the Capital at a time when the triple lockdown was imposed has brought shame to the entire state.

Chief secretary Vishwas Mehta had congratulated the principal secretary, higher education department and entrance commissioner for the successful conduct of examination during the review meeting held on July 17.District collector Navjot Khosa told the meeting that there was a 50 per cent positivity rate in samples tested from clusters in the district and that there was a need to change the strategy. The district has already been reeling from the huge surge in cases on a daily basis and the first-line treatment centres hardly cater to the surging need. The district has over 2,000 active cases as on Monday
